More
Best-known for its starring role in Piedmont's Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti wines, Barbera is a northern Italian grape producing fresh, light-bodied red wines with low tannins. When young, most Barbera wines have a bright-red cherry character, distinguished from Nebbiolo by softer tannins and a certain roundness. When matured in barrel and allowed to age in bottle for a few years, this turns to a denser, sour-cherry note.
Barbera vines grow in clayey and notched soils, rich in limestone from Piedmont. Barbera d'Alba wines are appreciated for their deep color, low tannins and high levels of acidity. Due to its high acidity, Barbera d'Alba is best kept a few years in the bottle, to allow the integration of fruits, oak, tannins and acidity.
