The pride of Piedmont, Nebbiolo is the backbone of the best Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The berries are black, medium-sized, round-elliptic, thin but with a tough, dark purple skin and a waxy appearance. Nebbiolo wines are often distinctively perfumed with an aroma described as "tar and roses", along with a moderate body, strong, tannic backbone and high, fresh acidity.
One of Piedmont's greatest wine regions, Barbaresco is one among the best expressions of the Nebbiolo grapes. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils on steep, "pre-alpine" hills – a characteristic of the region. The vineyards are situated to best "ensure a suitable ripening of the grapes", effectively meaning most Barbaresco vineyard sites have some (if not an entire) southerly exposure.
