Type of Grape
Nebbiolo

The pride of Piedmont, Nebbiolo is the backbone of the best Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The berries are black, medium-sized, round-elliptic, thin but with a tough, dark purple skin and a waxy appearance. Nebbiolo wines are often distinctively perfumed with an aroma described as "tar and roses", along with a moderate body, strong, tannic backbone and high, fresh acidity.

Barbera

Best-known for its starring role in Piedmont's Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti wines, Barbera is a northern Italian grape producing fresh, light-bodied red wines with low tannins. When young, most Barbera wines have a bright-red cherry character, distinguished from Nebbiolo by softer tannins and a certain roundness. When matured in barrel and allowed to age in bottle for a few years, this turns to a denser, sour-cherry note.
