Piemont is located in north-western Italy, one of the 20 regions of the country and one of the largest vineyard areas in Italy. More than half of its 170,000 acres of vineyards are registered with DOC designations. Indigenous grape varieties include Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino and Brachetto. They produce prestigious wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco from the Langhe near Alba and also Moscato d'Asti which produces sparkling wines from vineyards around the Asti area.
