Sauvignon Blanc ranges in style and flavor, depending on the ripeness of the grapes when they are picked and where it is grown. Most famous are the those from France and New Zealand, but nice Sauvignon Blancs can also be found in the US, Italy and South Africa. In France it is known for its pivotal role in the renowned Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume varietals. Some of the best Sauvignon Blancs come from the cool region of Marlborough, New Zealand where the grapes thrive especially well. Here the crisp citrus and distinct herbaceous qualities of the grape really come forth. The grape doesn’t take well to warm climates, where it can loose its zesty characteristics and top over on acidity. The wines are usually best drunk relatively young and are a popular choice for fish and shellfish.
